In 2015, I graduated with a BFA in printmaking at Massachusetts College of Art and Design (MassArt). From the moment I pulled my first print I was hooked. It's also a finnicky, heavily technical, process-based mode of design that will break your heart. When discussing printmaking, the methodology generally breaks down into 3 or 4 areas of production:
Intaglio - copperplate etching
Lithography - planographic (flat surface) printing done on giant slabs of rock!
Screen-Print - the most modern and common method still in commercial use
Relief - woodcut, wood engraving and linocut.
Since moving back to Austin, my hometown, I was lucky to join a studio in town to practice the "fine art" side of my work. It should come to no surprise that cats, books, and rock 'n roll feature prominently, pooling with satire. Here are a few etchings that I have made in the last couple years.
Occasionally, I also do some linocut prints to keep myself loose and to think in a different, more graphic mode. One of the benefits of linocut prints is that they can be printed by hand, making it a much more approachable introduction to printmaking.
Throughout the year I participate in events organized by PrintAustin. They put on craft fairs, exhibitions and demos that are some of the best art events in the city. I encourage everyone to follow them on Instagram at @printaustin to keep up to date on any upcoming events.
